Eyes in the Sky: How Drone Technology Is Changing the Way We Monitor Coffee at Origin

When we talk about quality, we don't just mean what arrives at your roastery. We mean what's happening on the ground — literally.

That’s why Greentide supported the Green Wings Project, a pioneering aerial survey of coffee plantations in El Salvador using drone-based remote sensing technology. The goal: to monitor plantation health with a level of precision that the human eye alone simply can’t achieve.

The Challenge

Coffee plantations in Central America face constant pressure from disease, pests, nutrient deficiency, and unpredictable environmental conditions. Traditional visual inspections are limited — by the time symptoms become visible to the naked eye, the damage is often already done. And on steep, densely planted hillsides, getting a comprehensive view of an entire plantation on foot is nearly impossible.

We needed a smarter way to see what’s really going on.

The Approach

Working with agritech specialists, the project deployed UAV flights equipped with three types of sensors: standard RGB cameras for visual inspection, thermal imaging to detect temperature anomalies in the soil and canopy, and multispectral sensors to measure vegetation health through NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) — a scientific measure of chlorophyll content and plant vitality.

Multiple plantation zones were surveyed across several flights, with every image georeferenced and mapped to precise GPS coordinates. The result was a comprehensive, data-rich portrait of plantation health — zone by zone, plant by plant.

What We Found

The overall picture was encouraging: most surveyed areas showed healthy NDVI readings, indicating strong vegetative vigor across the plantations.

But the real value was in the detail. The multispectral analysis revealed localized zones with lower NDVI values that correlated directly with early-stage Coffee Leaf Rust infection — a finding that wasn’t yet visible in standard visual imagery. In other areas, thermal anomalies pointed to potential nutrient deficiency linked to soil structure and competing vegetation.

These are exactly the kind of early warning signals that allow targeted intervention before a small problem becomes a big one.

Why This Matters for Your Coffee

At Greentide, our commitment to quality doesn’t begin at the port. It begins at the farm. Projects like Green Wings reflect our belief that better data leads to better decisions — and better decisions lead to better coffee.

When we understand what’s happening at origin with this level of precision, we can work with producers to protect crop health, plan harvests more effectively, and ultimately deliver more consistent, higher-quality green coffee to your roastery.

It’s origin expertise backed by science. And it’s one more reason why working with a sourcing partner — not just a trader — makes a difference.
